Diabetes affects millions of people in the United States each year and if your family has a history of it, you are more likely to contract it. If you haven't contracted diabetes in your childhood, you might be at risk for diabetes type 2 and it's a good idea to find out if you are risk. Knowing your chances of contracting it is your first step in treating it as it develops most often in middle-age and older adults. You can receive diabetes testing through Medicare as it does cover screened tests. Medicare also covers many other items related to diabetes as well. What Does Medicare Cover? Medicare does cover quite a lot when it comes to diabetes testing and treatment. Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers outpatient diabetes self-management training. This means, you are taught how to cope with and to manage your diabetes with certified trainers and this cost is covered by Medicare. Medicare may cover up to 10 hours of this training which can include 1 hour of personal instruction and 9 hours of group training. It is possible that you could qualify for up to 2 hours additional training each year if the course takes place wthin the calendar year after you first took your training. Who is Eligible? This training is available to those people who have enrolled in Medicare Part B and who are at risk to suffer complications from diabetes. You can prove this fact by having your doctor or some other health care provider give you a hand written order to submit to Medicare. There might be exceptions if group sessions are not available at the time you need training or if your doctor or health care provider informs Medicare that you have special needs and would be better suited to individual training.
