The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest and most visited museum around the world; it exhibits a lot of magnificent artworks from artists throughout the worldwide and history. The oil on canvas Stage Fort across Gloucester Harbor (38 x 60 in) by Fitz Henry Lane in 1862 and Whalers (36 1/8 x 48 1/4 in) by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1845 are two of the best examples. According to the labels in the museum, Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865) was a Gloucester painter and Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) was a British artist. The overall structure of this picture is centered around the whaling boat in the middle. The black shape in the lower left corner of the figure gave me the impression that it was like a whale wounded and raises its head. The color of the seawater around it is dyed to a different color by its blood. The white whaling ship is coming towards it. Under the sails there are three protruding triangles, looking like the look of death, approaching the whale. Since there are not human activities, I cannot tell if this picture is in any season. The whole picture of the background is gray, we can see the weather was very gloomy. The observer is looking up in the water from the lower right corner of this painting. Moreover, the spray of the waves on the lower right corner makes me feels like the observer has fallen into the water, he is struggling in the water. Although this painting is drawn with a rough brush, and the scene of this painting is from painter's imagines, not real. However, there are lots of details to prove that this painter is a careful observer in the daily life. For example, each texture on the whaling ship sails is clearly visible. Splashes of water are like scattering in front of you, giving you a feeling of immersion. The three raised triangles next to the whaling ship, if I look carefully, they seem like the faces of three fierce
