It describes how she steals books and hides a Jew in her home although illegal. Despite the fact that the story is about Liesel, Death narrates the novel. Many readers argue if Zusak’s decision of using Death as the narrator is effective.
The book, “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, is set in Nazi Germany during World War 2. The Book Thief is narrated by Death, who tells the story of Liesel Meminger, a 9-year-old girl taken in by a foster family after her Communist parents are killed. Liesel steals books from Nazi book burnings, hides them under her bed, and eventually learns to read and write with the help of her foster father hans. Since the book is set during WW2, the book shows many ways why war is tragic. It destroys people and towns and puts fear into the air.
Death introduces himself as the narrator of the book. He says he has seen the book thief three times before all while he was doing his work colleting souls. The book thief, Liesel Meminger, is a nine year old little girl. Her mother, Brother Werner, and her start off traveling on a train to meet their foster parents. But suddenly Werner dies.

A few weeks ago, I finally got around to reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I’ve owned the book for about a year now, and I recently decided it was time to pick it up. The book is narrated by Death, and I knew I wanted to portray his character through a scrapbook. Death is a very multi-dimensional character who defies the stereotypical expectations of Death.
The narrator of this book is Death. Death only comes when someone dies, to take their soul away from their bodies. In The Book Thief, Death said, When a plane crashed, Death reached for the soul of a dead man. Death appears whenever someone is dying throughout the novel. Death associates the death of people by certain colors in the sky so he can detach and distract himself from the personal experience of each character and people around them.
Which character is most affected by war, and how? “No matter how many times she was told she was loved, there was no recognition that the proof was in the abandonment.” (32) The Book Thief by Markus Zusak discusses mainly the power of words, and war in Nazi Germany and how a girl grows up in pain, love, and misery through that period of her life. To begin with, Paula, Liesel’s mother gave her and her brother Werner to foster parents, Liesel’s parents were communists so they took her father away, hence, even though she didn’t know why, her mother had to give them over to Rosa and Hans Hubermann, but just before getting there, death took Werner away. And maybe that’s when pain begins for Liesel, as much as readers know.
