Dian Fossey was one of the few people who have had the determination and courage to dedicate their life to studying primates. Dian spent 14 years of her life living with gorillas, and 18 years of studying them. Throughout Dian’s life, she learned and discovered many things. She established a research center for gorillas, and even escaped being captured in the civil war. Although Dian had a short life of 53, she was very successful.

On January 16th, 1932, a baby girl named Dian Fossey was born in Atherton California. Her childhood was unhappy as her parents divorced very early in her life. She was known for fighting with poachers. She even wrote a book called Gorillas In The Mist, which became a bestseller in 1983. Dian had devoted 18 years of her life to study, befriend, and protect the mountain gorillas. Her work still continues through the Dian Fossey Fund International.

Dian devoted so much of her time to studying gorillas that she didn’t really have much of a life outside of it. After Dian’s book became a bestseller, A man named Mr. Glimcher and Universal Studios planned to make an autobiography with Dian Fossey. On December 26, 1985, Mr. Glimcher traveled to Rwanda to talk with dian about the movie plans. Hours before they were going to meet, Dian Fossey was murdered. She was found hacked to death with a machete. Her murder remains unsolved and the investigation was poorly handled, but people suspect that a poacher had killed her.

Although Dian’s murder still remains a mystery, the movie, Gorillas In The Mist was still made on October 7, 1988. It was directed by Michael Apted starring Sigourney Weaver. Dian’s research center is still running in Rwanda Africa, and they are still learning new things about gorillas each day. Without Dian’s studies, we wouldn't have as much knowledge about gorillas as we do
