The second educational technology business to be used in this multi-case study is, Summit Learning. Summit Learning is a developing free online personalized tool that allows students in grades 6 to 12 to set and track customized learning goals. The Summit Learning Platform was an evolved idea of Summit Public Schools, conceived by Dian Tavenner in 2012. Tavenner, who is the founder and CEO of Summit Public School, a charter management organization (CMO) in California and Washington State, decided to move all schools under the CMO to a student-centric model. Summit Learning core features includes the ability to customize learning content, empower students to self-directed, engage students in deeper learning projects, use data to personalize instruction, and support teaching in the classroom. Summit Learning incorporates these features in a comprehensive digital curriculum developed by teachers in the classroom. Its curriculum consists of courses that provide meaningful projects and personalized playlist of content and assessments that are aligned to Common Core standards. Summit Learning’s program is a blended learning model in which students use computers to carry out individualized lesson, in large groups, small groups, or individually (Louis, 2017). The blended learning model also allows teachers to pull groups of students and reinforce content and skills using more tradition methods of teaching. Summit Learning requires schools to adjust scheduling blocks, grading policies, assessments, and resources to effectively run the program.
