The Diary of Anne Frank, by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, is a play adapted from the journal of Anne Frank; she was a Jewish girl who went into hiding with her family in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The play portrays the struggles and experiences of Anne Frank and her family. The Tattooist of Auschwitz, by Heather Morris, is a historical fiction about Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jewish man, who was a prisoner in Auschwitz. It describes his life as the Tätowierer, who was responsible for tattooing numbers on prisoners and his relationships with them. The characters in this play and this book had great hope and optimism for the future; they were also very brave and risked their lives to support others. Two of the main characters in the play, Miep and Mr. Kraler, were previously employed by Mr. Frank; now they smuggled food, medicine and everything else the Frank family needed into the Secret Annex. Miep also brought them information about the advances made by the Allies against the Nazis. This information gave the family hope that they may survive. In the play, Anne manages to keep everyone happy and hopeful by giving them gifts during Hanukkah. Just as everyone started to go to bed on Hanukkah, thinking the holiday was over, Anne said “No it isn't.
