My favorite character in Dicey’s Song is Maybeth because she is the only character I can relate to in the story. Maybeth is the second youngest sibling in the story. What makes me fond of Maybeth is her unique interest in music. Unlike the rest of her siblings, she can memorize songs after hearing them once. This gift is one that many musicians like myself aspire to have. Unfortunately, Maybeth has a learning disability that prevents her from learning words as fast as other kids her age. She is also incredibly shy and has difficulties making friends at school. This is what makes her very different from me. The novel states, “I’m not saying Maybeth is a genius, or anything like that. But she is one of those people, one of those lucky people who will always have music in their lives.” This quote shows how music is a key part of Maybeth’s life, just like it is in my life. …show more content…

Throughout the book, Dicey has to face many problems like affording to take care of her three siblings and trying to accept that her mom will never be able to take care of her again. She especially struggles at school when it comes to her schoolwork and making friends. Luckily, towards the end of the novel she makes two friends at school, Mina and Jeff. These friends help her to get through the hard events in her life, which improves her work at school. Dicey gets a job as well, so she can help her family. By doing this, she inspires her younger brother James to get a job selling newspapers. This helps James open up towards new people. Finally, at the end of the novel, Dicey’s mother dies and she learns to accept loss and carry on in life. Thankfully, I have not experienced any of the conflicts that Dicey has had to face, except for her struggles at school. Unfortunately, there was a time when it was hard for me to make friends at school, but I learned from those experiences. Now I have a lot of good friends and I can face any challenges ahead of
