"Dick’s Sporting Goods was founded in 1948 when an 18-year-old Dick Stack was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. An avid fisherman, Dick was approached by the store owner to come up with a list of products needed to get into the fishing tackle business" (Company Overview, n.d.). "After Dick presented his suggestions, the owner told him he was a dumb kid and had no idea what he was doing" (Company Overview, n.d.). Dick's response to the store owner was to quit his job. The next Step that Mr. Stack would take resulted in acquiring $300 from his grandmother, which would lead to Dick to open a bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton, New York (Company Overview, n.d.). It was not until the late 70's where Dick began to expand his line of products to much of what we see in today's Dick's Sporting Goods (Company Overview, n.d.). Dick’s son, Ed Stack, is the current CEO of Dick's Sporting Goods (Company Overview, n.d.).
