How Autocratic Leaders Maintain Control An authoritarian is defined as someone who has complete or almost complete control over one or more people (Merriam-Webster). George Orwell's novel, Animal Farm, is a story in which a group of animals is able to rise to power over all the other animals. Similar to how Joseph Stalin and many other authoritarians and dictators around the world have throughout history and during the present time. They are able to control an entire nation of people and animals, who have different opinions and values.
The pig leaders in Animal Farm represent the Russian Revolutionary leaders who controlled the Soviet Union. Napoleon, who takes charge after the death of Old Major, symbolizes Joseph Stalin. Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union in the mid 1920s, his goal was to strengthen the Union under communist ideals. Napoleon inherits similarities from Stalin, for example, the way Napoleon changes the rules and polices of the farm, his secretive meetings and actions, and lastly his manipulation of the animals. “You do not imagine, I hope that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege…
Power, Oppression, and Corruption Animal Farm brings alive the voices and personalities of farmyard animals. It is a twist on the events that took place during the Russian Revolution. This fable tale brings forth the conflicts the fallen Russian Empire through displaying the levels of class and real life people in animals. There is easily a good and a bad archetype, however, using the naivety of the uneducated animals the population is manipulated and leered into a false security. The leaders take control and under the power of suggestion, the public becomes starved, overworked, and silenced.
Encompassing a variety of qualities such as sharp perception and resourcefulness is leadership–arguably the most impactful characteristic a human (or animal) can possess. Based on tyrannical leader Joseph Stalin, the fierce-looking boar Comrade Napoleon effectively showcases these qualities when guiding his fellow animals in George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Napoleon demonstrates effective leadership by applying his acute perception to improve his public image. After overthrowing former President Snowball, the conniving pig spreads conspiracies about Snowball to unite the farm animals against a common enemy. Napoleon also distorts the truth to frighten the animals which eventually leads them to view him as their protector and savior.
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Power itself I know is not always a good thing. In George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm you would be easily be able to pick out reasons why this is. Power Power is corruption itself, I will elaborate to you a few reasons in detail to establish that "power corrupts”. Power corrupts, It is anything but difficult to see that this statement is factual.
In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell characterization is necessary to build the allegory. Three characters symbolize the allegory. Napoleon represents Stalin, Boxer represents the proletarians, and snowball represents Trotsky. The symbolization of Boxer, Napoleon, and Snowball all incorporate the theme of good and bad leadership.
Animal Farm -the history of a rebellion that went wrong- is George Orwell 's brilliant satire on the corrupting influence of power. It was first published in 1945. According to Orwell, the book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalin era in the Soviet Union. In the book, Mr. Jones, the owner of the Manor farm is so lazy and drunken that one day he forgets to feed his livestock.
Elizabeth Lee Mrs. Clarke English 9 BLOCK 16 March 2015 The Power of Greed As the animals soak in their own sweat, they rest in deep thought on the mounds of dirt in the fields of England, where the dictatorial Mr. Jones had once ruled before he died. A new leader named Napoleon has come into position after his death.
In the book, Animals farm by George Orwell, the animals tried to take over the farm. The name of the farm at the beginning of the book was Manor Farm. The animals then took over the farm and changed it to Animals farm. Mainly the pigs started to change once Mr. jones was run off the farm. When the pigs power turns uncontrollable, their corruption destroys all the animals hard work.
The last chapter in “Animal Farm,” starts years later. Many animals have died but many have replaced them. Two new animals were brought from Pilkington’s farm, the two horses are very stupid. The windmill was finally rebuilt and is now being used for milling corn. There is still very little food on the farm.
The introduction to my Literary Analysis for “Animal Farm” by George Orwell is that the animals on the farm and the pigs own the animals and land on the farm. The pigs are rude and mean and they don’t care about the other animals on the farm and they didn’t like snowball and they exiled him for thinking about the windmill. The short summary would be that the pigs don’t care and they should be exiled they changed the rules on the side of the barn and nobody even said anything and they were afraid to tell anyone.
Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Lord Acton) This quote is telling us that when people get into roles of absolute power they tend to become corrupt, as a result of that power. This quote can be applied to Napoleon from the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, because at the beginning of the novel Old Major’s words inspired Napoleon. As a result, he believed that humans were evil for forcing animals to work for them and that animals should be able to live freely, not under anyone’s control; however, as the story progresses his belief changed and the animals did not get to live their utopian dream. At the start Napoleon and the other pigs strongly believed that all animals were equal and had the right to live in a place that took care of their well being.
I ended Animal Farm in this manner because it teaches people not to believe everyone they talk to. Most people are good people and can be trusted but, other people have to be looked out for. In this story, the animals should have waited awhile and made Snowball earn back his trust before believing in him. Before, when Snowball and Napoleon were in charge together, Snowball was the main one who was making many of the decision. However, he did let the other animals have a say which was different from Napoleon's view were no animals have a say in anything.
The main difference between Farmer Jones and Napoleon, is that Napoleon ruled by force, while Farmer Jones really had no rule unless the animals were unruly. One example of Napoleon’s forceful rule is shown in the quote “Napoleon acted swiftly and ruthlessly- He ordered the hens’ rations to be stopped, and decreed that any animals giving so much as a grain of corn to them, was to be punished by death”(87). This shows Napoleon’s ability to rule through the use of force and fear. Although morally wrong, force and fear are the most effective ways to rule.
“Animal Farm” by George Orwell, is a story to show how absolute power corrupts, just as Stalin’s power did during the Russian Revolution in 1917. In the allegory “Animal Farm” each character represents a political figure from the days around the Russian Revolution. For example, Joseph Stalin is represented by a pig named Napoleon, Squealer, another pig, represents Stalin’s propaganda department, and the dogs represent the Secret Police (KBG). Using the nine dogs that Napoleon raises (intimidation), Squealer (propaganda), and manipulation, Orwell illustrates how Napoleon was able to gain and maintain control of the farm. The nine dogs that stay by Napoleon at all times are useful for Napoleon to gain and maintain control of the farm because they scare the other animals, intimidating them so that they do not disobey Napoleon.
