I agree with Lurai and Taylor, Le Guin uses diction and foreshadow to build suspense to reinforce the theme of the short story called, “The Wife’s Story.” In the beginning of the story, Le Guin uses words like “wasn’t”, “don’t”, “can’t”, and “isn’t” to show that the mother was in a sock of the event that she witnessed and she just can not get over the event. Later on the doubtful phases like “ I’ll never hear anything so beautiful. I’ll never know a joy like that again,” added more suspense because as a reader you want to keep reading to find out what happens.
