Hi everyone, at the last meeting we have discussed about Jeans. Now I will explain to you the question number three that my group has discussed last week. Well, after we read the article about Levi’s, we all knew that the first inventor of jeans is Levi Staruss. He got the idea of making that sturdy pants in 1850. But why the “birthday” of blue jeans is on May 20, 1873? It took about 23 years after the invention and why it is not exactly on the year that jeans was invented? The answer is because blue jeans have just patented on that date by Jacob W. Davis and Levi Strauss & Co. Davis is the other man who took a role for the evolution of jeans and asked Levi patented it together. He invented rivets for jeans pocket and then it becomes a company trademark. How could he get the idea of riveting pocket? I’ll explain it to you. Jacob W. Davis was born in 1831 in Riga, Latvia where he trained and worked as a tailor. After he traveled around a lot and changed his job many times, finally in 1869 he opened a tailor shop on the town’s main thoroughfare, 31 Virginia Street, Nevada. He made tents, horse blankets, and wagon covers from heavy duty cotton “duck” and “denim” that purchased from Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco. Each time he returned to Virginia City, he came to Davis and asked bitterly to fix the pockets, so that the pockets were strong enough to carry ores and couldn’t easily broke. Davis felt really tired of this continuous complaining. At this point, I think that Davis had no idea for the solution because it was already many times since Alkali came to him and he couldn’t do anything. He tried to pacify Alkali and stop his complaints with a kind of joke to secure the pockets with copper
