Did Romeo And Juliet Have True Love

In the Shakespear love story, by William Shakespear, Romeo and Juliets love was forbidden. The two lovers stayed secret, but was it really love they felt or was it the feeling of excitement and danger from getting caught? It becomes apparent that the love they shared was not genuine. Despite the tragic end of their story, there are many reasons why their love may not have been true or they may not have had true love.
One reason is that their relationship was based on lust rather than a deep, meaningful connection. As Romeo himself admits, he was initially drawn to Juliet's physical appearance rather than her character, "O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! …show more content…

As Friar Laurence warns Romeo, "These violent delights have violent ends, and in their triumph die, like fire and powder, Which, as they kiss, consume" (II.vI.9-15). This foreshadows the tragic end of their story and suggests that their love was not strong enough to withstand the obstacles they faced.
Another reason is, their impulsiveness and rash decisions ultimately led to their tragic end, indicating that their love may not have been as strong as they initially believed. As Romeo himself acknowledges, "O, I am fortune's fool!" (III.I.143). After he kills Tybalt and is banished from Verona. This suggests that he realizes the consequences of his actions and the role his impulsiveness played in the tragedy, meaning he didn't think about the consequences of anything much rather Romeo and Juliet's love.
Lastly, while their story is undeniably romantic, it is important to consider whether their love wasn't genuine. As Friar Laurence tells Romeo, "Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast" (II.III.81-94). This advice applies not only to their actions but also to their emotions, suggesting that true love requires time and thoughtfulness.
