Didn’t Really Care Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” conveys a callous, emotionally hardened, tone from the word choice and colloquial language used throughout the story. In the short story Jackson mentions “Mrs.Delacroix selected a stone so large she had to pick it up with both hands and turned to Mrs.Dunbar.” (41). In other words, Jackson uses the words large and both hands to convey that Mrs.Delacroix, Tesse’s “friend”, grabbed the biggest rock to throw at her. This suggest that Mrs.Delacroix really wasn’t her friend which sets a callous tone since she didn’t care that they were going to kill her. Jackson also reveals ‘“All right folks,” Mr.Summers said. “Let’s finish quickly.”’ (34). Basically, the town wanted to finish everything
