Riding the school bus instead of taking the car is much more beneficial to the environment. Nevertheless, school buses consume around 8.2 billion gallons of diesel fuel, releasing many pollutants in the air. The use of diesel fuel used in TDSB school buses results in waste gases or air expelled from the engine, which escape from the tailpipe containing numerous harmful chemicals. Heavy- duty diesel vehicles, those used for TDSB School buses emit harmful air-pollutants such as fine particle matter, nitrogen oxide, and diesel partial matter. The passengers of the bus are exposed to many particles from the diesel fuel, which can get stuck to their lungs. Sixteen out of the twenty world’s largest oil fields have reached the peak of oil production. It is estimated that if the human population, and consumption of resources continue to grow as they are now, oil deposits would be completely consumed by the year 2052. As the supply of fossil fuels decreases, the demand also increases. Consequently, over time the cost of diesel fuel for would be extremely expensive, and thus make it economically unviable to use fossil fuels as the main source of fuel for TDSB school buses. Another factor to take into consideration is the energy efficiency of biodiesel versus that of petroleum-based diesel. The energy efficiency of a device is the ratio of useful energy produced to the total amount of energy expended. It has been determined that biodiesel marginally more superior with regards to energy efficiency. Biodiesel yielding 3.2 units of energy for every unit of fuel fossil consumed, while B20 yields 0.98 units of fuel energy product for every unit of fuel. By implementing an alternative fuel source in TDSB school buses the goal of this project is to provide economical benefits for the TDSB, and to improve the health of the students. The shift to this cleaner source of fuel would allow for savings overtime in maintenance costs, fuel costs, and opacity test costs. The use of biodiesel as an alternative fuel source would have future positive economical effects for the TDSB. In the long term the use of biodiesel in school buses would be more cost effective with a reduction in maintenance of equipment expenses. Due to the fact that biodiesel has a detergent like properties, it has the ability to clean the engine by picking up particulate, gum, and varnish particles stuck inside engine parts. Additionally, biodiesel improves the lubricity of the fuel, thus leading to longer engine life, resulting in lower maintenance costs.
