Throughout the novel, Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson the protagonist, Isabel, must face the brutal inequalities and inhumane treatment of a slave during the Revolutionary war in 1777 in New York. Everyday Isabel must face the wrath of her monstrous master, Madame Anne Lockton. On one occasion she changes Isabel’s name to Sal because it was “more suitable” (55). The woman completely stripped Isabel of her own identity, and this small action shows how much power a master had over their slave, who could not speak back without fear of punishment. Another form of punishment was locking Isabel in a potato bin, “That was more than half filled with potatoes and smelled of damp earth and worms.
In this section, sentimental appeals is shown because Frederick Douglass uses emotions to let us readers know how Covey brutally abused him. Mr.
Douglass uses paradox to demonstrate that slavery degragrates the slaverholder. When Douglass under Mr. Sever’s care he described that: “He was less cruel, less profane… He whipped, but seemed to take no pleasure in it. ”(Douglass 24). Most slaveholders are characterized to be cruel and inhuman because of the whipping and the way they treated the slaves.

In “The Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass” Frederick Douglass talks about his life as a slave ,and the challenges that he went through ,but he also tells how slaveholders were affected during slavery. Frederick Douglass talks about how slaveholders have great powers over their slaves. Being the slaveholder can enforce that you are above the slave ,and that you are allowed to do what you please to you “property” ,and that could corrupt your humanity. One example of this is Sophie Auld. Sophie Auld was a kind and generous slaveholder ”I was utterly astonished at her goodness”(Douglass 45); she even helped teach Frederick Douglass to write, but after she had been the master of Douglass for a while she started to become inhumane, cruel, and malice.
Dehumanization of both slaves and slave owners must occur for slavery to exist. Slavery harms everyone involved, including the slaveholders who superficially seem to profit from the arrangement. Douglass’s narrative acknowledges the damage inflicted on both sides of the institution of slavery, emphasizing that a human being’s personality and disposition form per the laws and socially acceptable practices exhibited within the society. Douglass has an excellent example how he seen with his own eyes how his mistress became demonized when she became an owner of a slave. Douglass became Mrs. Auld's first salve owner and at the begging when they first met “she [was] of the kindest heart and finest feelings” (38).
In The Color Purple written by Alice Walker dynamic characters shape the storyline. A dynamic character is a character who changes throughout a story as a result of the conflicts they encounter during their journey. A perfect example of a dynamic character is Miss Celie.
