Even though they had the same goal the people who helped them, the children they wanted to see, and the challenges they faced once they got there were really different. Both Odysseus and Everett attempted to get back home to their wife with crews that were very unlike,but had some similarities to each other. Odysseus had many men 600 to be exact and they knew to an extent what they were getting into. Each one of Odysseus’s men in The Odyssey choose to go or were forced to go to the Trojan War, but they knew the end goal of beating the Trojans.
Odysseus and Everett are both on a journey to get home. In The Odyssey, Odysseus has been away for a long time, twenty years to be exact. He was at the Trojan War for ten years and it took him ten more to get home. In O Brother Where Art Thou, Everett got away from the other prisoners that he was chained with so he can go home and win his wife back. The two men are vain.
The new Marvel Movie, Black Panther, just hit the market and everyone is raving about it already. This movie hero from 2018 shares the same qualities as a hero from the Greek times; the stories of heroes use the same concepts, just with different names and settings. For example. Odysseus from Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey, shares many characteristics with the Black Panther. The major difference between the two is that Odysseus is struggling to go back home while Black Panther is struggling to save his home, but both concern the battle against injustice.
Odysseus is brave and strong, worthy of all the titles given to him. However, what makes him the hero he is is his ability to change and continuously gain new wisdom. He comes home to Penelope almost physically the same, but the things his eyes have seen have changed him mentally. Odysseus is slow, patient, and more appreciative than ever. “A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom.” (Bob Dylan). A modern hero is recognized by the goodness in their heart. Odysseus, the protagonist of Homer’s “The Odyssey”, is not a good example of a modern hero. Heroes cannot be cross cultural, and Odysseus’ heroics do not transcend time and apply to the modern world.
Debi Mazar is an actress who stated, “A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who just tried to give back as much as possible and help people. A hero to me is someone who saves people and who really, deeply cares.” Heroes are relevant to everyone, because at some point, everyone has had a hero. Sadly, today’s society degrades the meaning of the word “hero”. Heroes are an important aspect of life, but famous people are not always heroes.
Many characteristics can be applied to Odysseus in the book the (Odyssey, Homer), but a few really stand out. In fact, Odysseus can be considered an epic hero in the Odyssey, as evidenced by his actions, his faults, and his loyalty. An epic hero is brave, adventurous, a leader, and loyal. Most epic hero’s have faults as well. These characteristics closely follow Odysseus’s own.
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
Odysseus is a hero because he is smart. For example, when Odysseus and his men approach the giant he offers him ¨liquor to wash down your scraps of men¨ (Homer 991). Odysseus is clever by doing this because he can predict that the liquor will make him fall asleep. He knows that the boulder that is blocking the entrance is heavy so he doesn 't kill Polyphemus. Instead, Odysseus only hurts him.
The concept of hero has been interpreted in many ways throughout the ages. Hero have gone from knights slaying dragons and rescuing the princess, to heroes who save the world with their supernatural-like powers, to a modern day hero who is someone who has noble qualities and is regarded as a role model. In the epic, The Odyssey, by Robert Fagles, the heroic Odysseus is a well known in Greek mythology. However, although Odysseus is the most respected, honorable hero of Greek mythology he is not a modern hero. A modern day hero is someone who puts their life on the line to save the lives of other innocent people.
The Odyssey and the story of Don Quixote de La Mancha are completely different from each other, they say. However, if you pay attention to both stories, you will see a series of similarities as well as differences between them. According to the journeys Odysseus and Don Quixote take, the main focus in the stories, they have many things in common, even if one lived in Greece many years before the other start his journey. Analyzing both stories, we can perceive similarities about who they are fighting for and what they are fighting against, differences about the monsters they confront, and the resolution of the story.
Still however the characters are very alike in both their motivations. Odysseus and Percy Jackson define as being epic heroes because of their bravery, and the strength they find within themselves. Their reaction to their world define their different values and attitudes is they start to learn about them. They find what the gods like or dislike. The relationships with their mother and wife shaped them as the men they are because they helped motivate them to do the right thing and get back to their world.
First, Odysseus and Everett share an abundance of epic hero qualities. Everett shows his courage when he disguised as KKK to free Tommy. This parallels to when Odysseys and his crew hide under the sheep and defeats the mighty Polyphemus. Everett is a cunning, quick-tongued, sharp leader, which is the same as Odysseus. Also, Pete and Delmar appear to be as dumb as the crew written in the Odyssey.
In paragraph one the similarities of the movie and book were covered. An example of the similarities is Odysseus is obsessed with his hair just like how Everett is. In paragraph two I talked about the many differences there are. For example the different time ranges really change some of the events that happened in the Odyssey. Last paragraph was about both similarities and differences of the Odyssey and O Brother,
The Odyssey and Ulysses were meant to be the same character written by two different individuals. Both individuals encountered obstacles at some point in their lives. Odysseus and Ulysses were both considered a hero in today’s society along with their similar characteristics. The heroic qualities and themes presented in both pieces of the literature work emphasized the similarity between the two characters along with their differences.
