Assignment 1 In the excerpt, “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay” by Marie Foley, it reveals how the Five-Paragraph Essay formula as an unnatural method of writing. Foley shows that this formula is used by teachers as a strategy for survival, since it would be easier to teach a class the formula of five-paragraph than to teach the students individually. Also that this formula was originally was planned to help retain the efficiency and clarity of the essay. It’s a useful step for beginning student to write and to overcome writer’s block.
In their Introduction to the “They Say /I Say” book, Gerald Graff and Cathy Brikenstein strongly believe that their templates will improve the reader’s writing skills. Graff and Brikenstein insist that writing is just like an activity we are used to do continuously, and if we follow certain process, we improve our writing and “help [our] writing become more original and creative.” (11) The authors also added that writers must give the opposing argument (they say) and then comes the thesis, which “should always be a response to the arguments of others.” (4) Personally, I agree with most of the points that the authors argued about.
Under the Articles of Confederation, The U.S. government was ineffective, as a result of the little power granted to Congress, along with weak relationships with other nations, and prompting the need for a centralized government. The biggest reason for the ineffectiveness of the U.S. government under the Articles of Confederation was the lack of power granted to Congress. The lack of power granted to Congress led to a disrespect of Congress’s rulings from the state governments. Whenever a law was passed, mainly, the state governments chose to do what they wanted, neglecting the laws and other commands, which ultimately lead to the disunity throughout the nation. As a result of thes disunity, many nations, Britain included, saw the Americans as weak and unorganized people.
In the book The Final Hour by Andrew Klavan, the main character, Charlie West, changed as a person due to their experiences fighting the Homelanders. Before starting the fight against the Homelanders, and he was still in jail for a murder he didn’t commit Charlie was very different, and more beaten down than he is by the end of the book. First of all, on page 4, Charlie says, “I felt a black despair surrounding me, closing in on me.” What this means is that Charlie is now scared, because he knows there are people in the prison that want to kill him, and the “black despair” was supposed to represent his coming death.

Graff and Birkenstein suggests that, “Instead of focusing solely on abstract principles of writing, then, this book offers model templates that help you put those principles directly into practice.”
In the informative book “They Say/I Say,” authors, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, encourage novice writers to put their writing into a larger conversation, using the claims of other writers on a topic to help their own claims. Graff and Birkenstein share that by starting with what others are saying about your topic, and continuing to return to it, you help your readers follow your writing. Return sentences will remind readers what claim you are responding to, making it easier for them to breeze through your paper without questioning your reason for bringing something up. Coming into RCC 200 in August, I felt confident as a writer in my ability to articulate my thoughts into a well-developed essay. However as with any student, I knew that I had plenty of room to improve, most notably in regards to formulating a strong thesis, descriptive body, and well-summarized conclusion, and was fortunate to have countless sources to guide me throughout the semester. At the conclusion of two months of practice, I have learned several new techniques of how to properly convey my writing across various forms of papers, which is best exemplified when comparing my annotated bibliography to my i-search paper. What was most challenging about my annotated bibliography was my lack of ability to apply college level strategies across several aspects of my paper. In hindsight, it is understandable as to how I was unable to express myself in a more coherent manor as I was not yet introduced to tools such as our class book They Say I Say, assistance from tutors at the writing center, or valuable expertise from college professors.
This chapter can help young writers in English class with their papers in many different ways. For instance, Trimble gives examples on what a veteran writer does in order to make their writing interesting. He also gives out techniques on how you can get a reader’s attention or how you can fix your writing to make it readable instead of having nonsense. What makes this difficult for me as a writer is that I write what ever comes to my mind and it will not make sense. Another thing that makes it difficult for me as a writer is that I am not good at getting the readers attention and having him hooked on to my work.
This semester was filled with many bumpy roads. I struggled in the beginning of the semester with my writings , as I didn 't feel confident enough to write a well developed writing. I seemed to find myself struggling whereas writing was not my favorable subject. The major errors I had in my writings this semester would be , grammatical errors,work citations, transition words, formatting ,paragraph development, sentence structure , and sentence level issue. Therefore I have set goals to improve my writing in the future.
However, since I was successful in this lab course, it would not be until Winter Quarter when I fully recognized this flaw in Writing 39B. Enduring my chaotic and unproductive process of writing the Rhetorical Analysis Essay and Rhetoric in Practice Final Project has greatly influenced and improved the way I conduct my writing process in general. The specifics of my writing process and how it has evolved will be expanded upon in the following chapter. In the end, learning the importance of having an efficient drafting process and starting my assignments in a timely manner has improved my performance in my other classes; especially lab. I now start my lab reports earlier, focusing on making them more organized, detailed, and well-written.
In this short passage by William Zinsser, Zinsser used compare and contrast to inform the readers about his personal opinions of being a writer. Due to different understandings and opinions on how to be a good writer, Zinsser decided to use compare and contrast in order to present a clean and detailed differences to the reader about how different people’s writing style can vary. By doing this, it would be extremely helpful for the readers to distinguish the differences of each writing style, see the benefits and disadvantages, and ultimately gather enough information to decide which style fits them the best. At the panel with Dr. Brock, Zinsser gave the audience a broader view of different writing styles and how they contribute differently.

In this essay, I admire how the writer starts her introduction sentence with an observation on her subject. The writer’s thesis is wordy but strong, and outlines the rest of the essay. Instead of using an entire quote, the writer paraphrased or used two or three important words from the quote to support her idea. The writer also analyzed the author’s ideas instead of stating exactly what the author wrote. The writer did however, use one to two long quotes that she could have shortened or paraphrased.
Each essay I wrote took me several time to write, several drafts which show that I have improve every time I do the drafts to write a perfect masterpiece. I learned a lot of skills and techniques this quarter, which has helped me to improve and progress my writing skills for the future. I will remember the skills, techniques, and tips that professor gave us in this English class for my higher education. For example, all the time that I went to visit professor Sapozhnikov office hours to receive help on my out-of -class essays has helped me to improve, grow, and progress in my writing skills as a writer. Some of the significant changes I have made as I was progressing and growing were to develop a strong thesis to help support my claims as I write my essays, such as facts, observations, illustration, and examples.
The method of research, citing facts, and brainstorming ideas was very intense in this class. Reading various arguments debating the topic I want to write on, was very challenging and time consuming. In this reflection essay I want to show how researching process was vital on changing my writing style. Also, what I’ve learned in English 105 class after a great summer semester with lots of material to learn from. Researching was drastically important, making every paper I made heavily based on research.
