Sermon of Rae My people, I am here to inform you that our neighboring city of Salem, has discovered a witch. It was late last night when the news broke out. Strange behavior was seen in the children of Salem village early this morning. They described it as an attack, being choked, and thrown to the ground. The witch has escaped their village and is now lost somewhere in Massachusetts.
The Salem Witch Trials and The Kent State Shooting are two similar incidents. Both in which many lives were taken when they did nothing wrong and many arrests were made daily and school was closed down for six weeks. Trials were held for several weeks. The guards were even scared for their lives. Universities had to shut down due to the shooting.
What does the Salem Witch Trials and, and Kent State Shooting have in common? The Kent State Shooting, and the Salem Witch Trials happened, during different time periods, but had so many things in common such as a lot of people died, and a lot of people got mad. The Salem Witch Trials and the Holocaust were similar but two different time periods. During both events similar things happened to innocent people, such as murder,embarrassment, and torture. The Salem Witch Trials, triggered by something small, started in spring of 1692. (miller,1124-1128) It was a period in time that was complete hysteria, people were falsely accused of consorting with the devil.(miller,1124-1128)
What a Horrible World In today 's day and age we have more technological, medicinal, societal, and worldly advancements than we did in either 1692 or 1947, but we are still just as easily corrupted by jealousy, power, and paranoia. The years 1692 and 1947 are perfect examples of prospering societies that became undermined through very similar processes. In 1629 the Salem Witch Trials and in 1947 the McCarthy Communist Trials- were both held unjustly, involving condemnation based on unfair trial practices. People desperately admitted to being a witch (1692) or to being a communist (1947) only because they didn’t want to die. Even if you were found innocent your life was virtually over because your career and livelihood had been destroyed
In 1692 The Salem Witch Trials started, it was a time when the Puritans, people who were strict to the bible, believed that there were witches living among them trying to taint their society. This ended quickly because the court concluded that the Witch Trials were a mistake after 200 people had been accused of witchcraft while 20 were executed. A long period of time after this, shortly after the end of WW2, in 1947, The Second Red Scare occured in America during the Cold War. This was a fear the Americans had for communists from Russia. The Americans feared communism because it did not allow private owned businesses or practicing religious acts.
Accusations of witchcraft, witches, and sorcerers were a major topic of discussion in France for hundreds of years in the past. Various witch trials took place in which an unjust verdict would be reached most of the time. Two specific witch trials that took place in France were the Valais Witch Trials of 1428-1447 and the Aix-en-Provence Witch Trials of 1611). Both of these trials exhibit wrongly accused people of being forced into admitting guilt, but differed greatly.
The events which took place in Salem in the dark year of 1962 can be seen as a crucible for every person living in that town. Every man, woman, and child was required to look past the lies and revenge-driven accusations of people they called neighbors, friends, and even family. They had to make it through this horrible time and change the sick way society was putting innocent people to death. This catastrophe in history is comparable to a modern day crucible, the fight against growing Islamophobia in America. These crucibles both saw the light of day due to lies and misrepresentation of specific groups of people.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play about what happened during the Salem Witch Trials. It gives insight about what people had to deal with in this situation and how they handled it. The trials were basically a big test which helped figuring out whether or not people were guilty of witchcraft. This is an example of what a crucible is. In our world today we still have crucibles and even though they are different than back then, they all relate to each other because of what influence they have on people.
The West Memphis Three vs. The Salem Witch Trials Society makes people feel pressured to make assumptions for their own benefits. There have been many examples of this throughout history. Society has been pressuring people to change and make assumptions, dating back to the stone ages all the way until the present. Why does society pressure people to make assumptions?
The Salem Witch Trials can be compared to many historical events around the world. The Holocaust is one of the most compared events to the Salem Witch Trials. These events are brought together by the facts that both of them were tragic and people died horrifically. Neither of these events were handled in a way that was beneficial for their economies. The Holocaust is a modern day “Witch Hunt” that relates to the Salem Witch Trials due to instinctual prejudice and mass hysteria, but differs in religion and the scale of the executions.
This was agreed upon during the trial that it was possible for the woman to see the killing happen when there was train coming by. But later on they look at this eyewitness testimony more critically by stating that “she had marks on the side of her nose and [was] rubbing them in court” and that no one “wears [there] eyeglasses to bed” hear they use reason that her testimony might be uncertain, that she might of seen a blur and that she could of made a mistake. In addition the jurors use their perceptions of the young boy with their personal knowledge and create a stereotype. As juror number ten says that “people form slum backgrounds area menace to society” as well as “the boy looks guilty” and “they’re born liars”. Some jurors assume that due to his background and experiences in life that he is guilty and identify him as a criminal instead of a human being like everyone else.
This is an important element when deciding who the best and worst jurors were. There were no facts as to who was right or wrong because we didn’t see the crime in question. All
