The movie “The Crucible” was based on the book written by Arthur Miller. It was basically an exact copy of the book and its layout nearly perfectly followed the book. But while the movie and book possess numerous similarities they possess a lot of differences. Though the differences between them don't change the plot of the story, the scenes in the movies do add more dramatic effect. There were differences in the setting of the book, the characters, and as well as a few scenes that were contrasting with the movie itself. Scenes like the execution of all the characters accused the kiss between John and Abigail, and the scene where the girls run into the water. Going in order, one of the earlier scenes in the movie and the book was the talk between John Proctor and Abigail Williams. In the movie, after Mary tried to announce the Judge that the girls were lying, they ran out of the courtroom and into the water away from John and Mary. During this scene, Mary turns on John and accuses him of working with the devil. This scene was not described or even talked about in the book. But this has a connection to the bible that may have intentionally been done by the director. Running into the water could be seen as a form of Baptism. Before she was in the water Mary was on the side of John. But after her baptism and being “reborn,” she joined back with Abigail and the other girl and was seen as a saint again by the other townspeople. Once she joins back with the other girls May regains her power back over the villagers and just shows their ignorance when confronted with power and assumed authority. This scene showed the audience how easily individuals can be made to believe lies because they don't know any better and believe a certain group of people to be smarter than them and are to be
