Gatsby Review In this review, I will be comparing characters from the 1974 and 2013 “The Great Gatsby” movies and how they portrayed the characters from the book. The 1974 movie and the 2013 movie depict the very famous book called “The Great Gatsby” with very different approaches. Both these movies had major differences and color, scenery, acting, and much more. The character Nick, Gatsby, and Daisy are all played by very different actors and show a wide variety of emotions through their acting. I believe Nick shows the greatest differences between both movies. Nick is the narrator in the original Fitzgerald version of “The Great Gatsby”. The Gatsby in 1974 movie version of “The Great Gatsby” was played by Robert Redford and the 2013 movie version was played by Leonardo DiCaprio. In my opinion, I believe both versions of Gatsby didn’t truly reflect the original depiction that the book showed of Gatsby. I think Robert Redford did a better job at showing the book's version of Gatsby but I also believed his acting skills didn’t meet the same standards that Leonardo DiCaprio’s version of Gatsby had. Robert played Gatsby with a lot less emotion and passion as an actor, there was a lot more mystery when it came to how Gatsby was thinking. Leonardo was extremely emotional and you could understand the stress and nerves behind Gatsby through his acting skills. A great example of this would be the scene Where Daisy meets at Nick’s house. In both scenes when Nick and Daisy enter the house and Gatsby had vanished but when Gatsby re-enters the home, their emotions are extremely different. In Robert’s version of Gatsby, he seems much calmer and more relaxed. Gatsby in Leonardo’s version of the role is drenched and stressed, he’s breathing heavily and you can tell he is extremely nervous to meet Daisy for the first time in a long time.
