In the article titled Face-off on the playing field By, Judith B. Stamper explains girls have their own story of support or discrimination, success also the debate of girls be allowed to compete on boys’ sports team. First, the writer Title IX explains female athletes are been treated second-class for long enough and should pass of inequalities and biases of girls. The writer also clarifies that girls doing sports make them healthier, physically, and emotionally. Other girls that don’t play sports are less likely to use of drugs. In addition, she notes a former Stanford University basketball player Mariah says, strength and independence of things girls learn from sports, the opportunities that are changing women.
Clearly, this is why the WNBA should get paid as much as men do. A second reason why the WNBA should get paid more is that women’s sports don’t get as nearly as
In colleges the amount men and women on sport teams has to be proportional with the amount of men and women at a school because of the Title IX. But there are some sports, like wrestling and other men sports like men's gymnastics or swimming, where there are a lot more men than women are on a team. Which leaves two ways to fix that problem; 1. Get more women on the team, which may require a lot of money 2. Make some of the men leave the team.
Ever since its debut by gym teacher Dr. James Naismith in 1891 basketball has become a widely popularized team sport for both men and women across the nation. Though enjoyed by both men and women, women have struggled to attain the same respect in the sport as men, even though the women at the University of California had their first extramural game in 1892. The same trend continues in the NBA, National Basketball Association, and WNBA, Women’s National Basketball. The NBA started 70 years ago in 1946 while the WNBA began 20 years ago in 1996. The NBA continues to gain popularity, while the WNBA struggles to still be known.
Since the NBA is more known than the WNBA they get more fans, sponsors, and exposure. It is tough for the WNBA to get out there, sure some people know it exists but most do not pay attention to it. Lisa Leslie, a WNBA star, stated “It would be nice getting more fans to support the WNBA and more women supporting women in sports” (Martin). “The Princeton women 's basketball team did something no other Ivy League men 's team had done before, racking up 30 wins and zero losses. The Princeton team garnered national headlines, which was great, but I still wondered what it was going to take for women 's sports to get the same attention as men 's sports” said Kelly Wallace the author of this article.
Writes “Often cited are cuts of men’s sports programs to make room for more women’s teams under the mandate of Title IX.” Barbara Sheehan points out that because of Title IX, guys are having to sit in the “sidelines” because their team is getting cut. A simple solution for this in directly in the law. “ The federal courts of appeals uniformly have rejected legal challenges to Title IX—holding that Title IX in no way requires schools to cut men’s teams, but that schools may choose to structure their athletics programs however they wish as long as they treat men and women equally.” (Sports)
The number one reason why I would pick basketball over football because it is more gender-neutral, both male and female get into it. Its always encouraging to see women competing not necessarily alongside them, but on a even scale as them. You don't need to break all sorts of sex/gender norms to play it or wear skimpy uniforms to make it more "interesting". In football, many guys
This pay difference can discourage the girls that want to become professional athletes. Thus, limiting the sports available for women to play and places to play in. Professional female athletes should be paid the same amount as professional male athletes because women should have equal representation and pay as the men, women are just as successful in sports as the men, and the best players are getting paid by foreign leagues to not
“The Draft,” as it is commonly referred to, was enacted in September of 1940. Even though the United States was not yet involved in World War II when the act was passed, President Roosevelt regarded it as a vital method of training American men for military service. By 1940, tensions between the United States and Germany were rising as the Nazis had invaded numerous European countries and the news of concentration camps was spreading. Throughout July of 1940, England was the next country to face Nazi aggression, as they faced attacks from the German airforce and navy. With fears that America would be the next country to face a German invasion, Roosevelt signed into law the Selective Training and Service Act, also proclaiming, “America stands
In 2007, Wimbledon after many years of protest resulted in equal pay among both female and male athletes. Before then, the U.S. Open was the only tournament that gave equal prize money to both genders. “Records show that equal pay has not hurt Wimbledon, as prize money has nearly doubled in the last five years for men and women.” Some people were sexist to women thinking that their only job was to take care of the family. I believe when it comes to salary women in the WNBA have less money is because some people aren't interested so their money isn’t going high even if they're good at
Women athletes and women workers do not get the recognition they deserve. Men especially, look down upon women when it comes to their appearances, their knowledge and a women's physical and mental strength. In certain cases, a woman loses out on a job in the sports industry because she is exactly a woman. A male trainer can refuse to train women because of the parts her body has. Men and women have grown up in a world with the mindset that women know less than men when it comes to sports.
“ No person… shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination” ( Wong). Within sports, many females get discriminated due to being “weak” or less interesting to watch. Some get less pay for having not equal amounts of participation as men do. The main issues are whether or not females and men should receive equal pay grade and whether if one does not participate as much which should they get the same attention. Equal pay grade may determine whether females play just as much as men and participate.
Illegalizing Abortion Will Not End Abortion For over 40 years, the Supreme Court case of Roe v. Wade in 1973 has been a point of controversy in America. Many people are calling for the case to be overturned; others are fighting for it to be upheld. Among all this disagreement, people have looked towards the government for help, leading this issue to become a political hot spot. Candidates of all types of government elections are very clear on their views of abortion, which can lead to some “one-topic votes”.
Gender Inequality in sports is an issue as old as sport itself. I choose this topic because we as a society seem to sweep it under the rug time after time. Women in sports however, try to address the issue only to have it go on deaf ears, leaving them to continue in the sport hoping something will change. Over the last few decades, strides have been made, but he sport remains an institution dominated by men. These women, whether they are in sport or in the business world, want a fair chance to be on the same level as their male counterparts.
Some counter arguments could be as follows. Some will say having people choose whatever sport they want could lead to them choosing a sport that is not really suited for them. Some others may argue that either male or female athlete may get distracted and not play the game as well as they could. Also, some may claim that that That is too masculine for her or too feminine for him. It is sad to say that boys and girls are discriminated or judged for playing together on the same team.
