Digital Environmentalism Greenpeace is an American based website that covers a plethora of issues pertaining to conservation and ecology. It concentrates on combating the spread of climate change and pollution. Greenpeace aims to engage the viewers to donate and volunteer. Furthermore, it uses the reader as a platform to disseminate their message. Its ability to tackle a broad spectrum of issues while remaining focalized allows Greenpeace to effectively outreach to larger number of people. Therefore, Greenpeace is able to transcend the confines of an average website and utilize rhetorical appeals to build a persuasive case in favor of environmental change. A dedicated tab to research demonstrates their appeal to logic. As they state, “Dig deeper into the issues with Greenpeace research. Our fact sheets and reports provide expert analysis and investigations.” ,(Greenpeace 2017). This focus on research provides a much needed base of credibility. Therefore, their claims such as climate change is manmade holds weight against scrutiny. An example of how they use research can be seen in their expository on the pollution caused by cell phones. Greenpeace uses evidence from independent sources and links the research for users to read. This builds trust with the audience therefore, persuades them. Another strategy Greenpeace is research based on the causes behind natural disasters. Take their response to Hurricane Harvey, “While we cannot say definitively that climate change caused Hurricane Harvey, science tells us with confidence that it has increased the impact of the flooding and heightened the intensity of the storm.” (Greenpeace 2017). Through the use of a real world event, the reader is able to see the reasoning as to why climate change is harmful.
