Have you ever thought you had a decent understanding of something only to find out you were wrong? Eight weeks ago, I believed my understanding of social media was substantial and that I resonated as a digital native. Much to my surprise, and based on the last eight weeks of course content, I’ve learned quickly that I am a split between a digital native and a digital immigrant. Please join me in my journey to learn of my misconception of social media coming into COM 467, new knowledge I’ve obtained, and how I can apply my new knowledge in the future. One course concept that further enhanced my understanding of social media was the words Digital Native and Digital Immigrant. In week two I was tasked with reading Mark Prensky’s, “Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants”, where Prensky describes the generational gap as it relates to technology. Digital Native is explained as the concept that today’s students are representatives of the first group to grow up with new technology (Bauerlein, 2011). Digital Natives process information differently and have been born into a digital world (Bauerleing, 2011). For folks entering the digital world at some other time than birth are described as a Digital Immigrant. Digital Immigrants are not fully enthralled in the world of technology and will still use hard copies of documents rather than solely working from an electronic device. In using Facebook I often wondered why some of my younger family members would post so much information about their personal lives, and almost have a live feed of what activities they were doing as they did them. After learning about digital natives, I realized that social media has been a tool that my younger family members have been born into and they are comfortable using the tools social media offers. My new approach from learning about digital natives is that I can connect with my digital native family members easier if I contact them via social media. Recently, I was discussing a family members passing with my spouse and he asked me my thoughts on why people speak to the deceased on social media. In the past, I don’t think I would’ve been able to formulate many educated thoughts, but in learning about digital natives I explained that some folks may be more comfortable with posting intimate information as they’ve been born into a time where social media is used for discussing many different elements. If folks are comfortable explaining intimate topics via social media, they may receive desired support or perhaps a load off their chest. My goal is to continue to have an open mind in learning and accepting new information in my journey as both a digital native and a digital
