There are many different types of government in this world and they are all vastly different. If you were to ask me what distinguishes one governmental form from another, I would say we should start by looking at a few of the governments and what makes them special. Let me go ahead and start with our own governmental system; Democracy. There are two types of democracy, which are Direct Democracy and Representative Democracy. Direct Democracy is where each citizen has the opportunity to vote on all important decisions made. The earliest example of this was in Athens, Greece. In a democracy, free and fair elections are held in regular intervals, granting all adult citizens are given the right to vote, making sure that the people’s wishes will be expressed. Not only is citizen participation a right, but some would say it is a duty or responsibility. Informed participation plays a major role in securing and keeping freedom in a democratic society. In the end, the only true way to represent all groups, societies, and communities is by valuing cooperating and compromise. Pronouncing this is always hit or miss for me. Some days, it’s no problem. Others, I can’t begin to pronounce it to save my life. A Totalitarian government is one in which the political system regulates almost everything that the public and private sectors of the country do. What’s a bit strange about this form of government, is that the term totalitarian was originally supposed to have a positive meaning. To the average person, this form of government sounds almost exactly like a dictatorship, however Legal Dictionary will tell us that “the main difference in totalitarian governments is that they typically have a goal in mind, such as industrialization, or the conquering of other lands”. What this means is that the government will dedicate all of its resources to achieving its one goal and the people are forbidden to disagree with the ruler’s decisions and actions.
