Throughout my life I have always heard that everyone is different. Differences like, skill, looks, race, knowledge, gender, etc. There is no exact copy of another person. Another thing that I have been told throughout my life is that some people try really hard to fit in, but I shouldn’t do that, I should love myself. Even though a lot of us as children are told to love ourselves, there are still a few that try to fit in. They don’t like or want to be different. One way that people try to fit in is by pointing out the people that are different, so no one will look at how they are different. This quickly leads to racism. Racism is sadly all over and it is just outright ridiculous. Racism is in the my world, your world and others. It is also in the world of the people of Maycomb County, in the book How To Kill A Mockingbird. One example of how racism exists in the world is the University of Missouri. This college is now well known because of some racial issues at the school. One student, Peyton Head, experienced direct racism his sophomore year. On his way to a party some other students shouted many racist slurs at him. Head recalls that this was his first encounter with direct racism. (Summer Ballentine 1). For example, there is a girl in my class that posted a racist comment on facebook. For the sake of safety I won’t say who but basically she said this “ Why is Shaquille O'Neal on the fruity pebbles and the white girl is on the cocoa pebbles, shouldn’t it be the other way around?” This comment is not as bad as some I’ve heard, and a white person might not find this offensive, but as a white person, how do we know what a person of color will think is offensive.
