Dirty Money The Great Gatsby is a classic American novel published in 1925 by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The setting of the story is New York City during the Jazz Age. The Jazz Age can easily be summed up by music, dancing, alcohol, and sex; all of which are present throughout the novel. Many details from The Great Gatsby were most likely placed in the novel because of personal experiences that the author had. Some of these experiences include enlisting into WW1, living in New York, living in the midwest, God, and the American Dream (“F. Scott Fitzgerald”). Many obvious themes from the novel are money, love, greed, and values. Every one of these themes can almost relate to every character in the novel, but especially Gatsby. In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is shown as a mysterious and charming man but when looked at more deeply, he is a greedy manipulative man that uses people for his own self gain. Once Gatsby found out that Nick knew Daisy, he almost instantly attempted to become Nick’s best friend. Gatsby first sends Nick a formal invitation to one of his parties, even though Gatsby never sends invitations to his parties. He wanted desperately to get close to Nick so that he could eventually be with Daisy. Then Gatsby, who never converses with is party guests, begins a conversation with Nick. This being his attempt to create a friendship with Nick. After a very brief talk Nick is invited to fly in Gatsby’s hydroplane the next morning. It would be arguable to say that his plan all along was to do anything at all possible to get what he wanted.
One huge sign that Gatsby used his friends was the turnout at his funeral. Many of the people in the city and his friends had known of Gatsby and his great parties, but almost no one attended his funeral. What many people do not know is that Gatsby never actually
