Disability Discrimination for Americans Disability means a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities. I found out that this term can be very hurtful to those that it describes. An estimated 48.9 million people, or 19.4% of the non-institutionalized civilians, have a disability. An estimated 24.1 million people have a severe disability. An estimated 34.2 million people, or 17.5%, have a functional limitation. With that being, disability rights are often looked over and is not a common issue to many people. Therefore, many disabled Americans are not treated equal. Americans with a disabilities are violated of their civil rights and are not treated as equal as healthy Americans. Many people view individuals with disabilities as useless, helpless, and unintelligent. Not all disabled people are this. In U.S History many Americans were denied their constitutional rights due to their illness. President Roosevelt was a president that first showed the U.S a major illness, polio. As President Roosevelt was looked down on and thought less of, he still made many great accomplishments while still have a disability of not being able to walk. In today’s society there are many organizations that have been established to help live out Dr. Martin Luther’s dream as every to be treated equal. The Special Olympics is an organization that was established to give disabled individuals the same opportunities to participate in athletics just as a healthy individuals. The struggles that disabled Americans go through on a daily bases includes job employment, education, housing, transportation, and many more. From the passing of the ADA public buildings and facilities have to meet or exceed the minion requirements for the design plan of the ADA; which includes, handicap accessible doors, ramps, and handicap parking
