History of disability in Australian Society 1.0 Introduction This report will discuss how the history of disability in Australian society arises in the 1980 documentary “Where’s the give and take”. 2.0 How disabled people were viewed The documentary shows people with disabilities, professionals working in the area of disability and family members rallying together through the streets of Sydney in 1980. In the documentary people were interviewed to express how they felt about the rally. Through the interviewees responses a description of how people with disabilities were perceived in 1980 can be formed. The interviewees expressed that people with a disability were perceived as incapable, not equal to nondisabled people and unseen. Their disability was thought to make them ineligible for the same rights as non-disabled people, thus their freedom was being compromised. 3.0 The struggles disabled people experienced The documentary shows the key issues that disabled people were facing at that time in history. Personal achievements were achieved as shown through the enthusiasm by the attendees and the interviews responses to feeling like they are contributing to a change. With the rally being recognised by the media it looked as though it was promising to be a start towards change and for society; accepting that disabled people are a part of the community. However, no dramatic change came from the political demonstration. This, can suggest that communities and the government at that time were hesitant of change as it meant that the gaps in the systems would need to be looked at and reconstructed.
