Over the past decade there have been many changes in the profession of journalism. The internet and social media in particular has had an immense impact on journalism. It has impacted journalism in both a good and bad way. There are many explanations for the term journalism and the best way to describe it is that journalism refers to the entertainment stories also known as feature stories and news that are conveyed in a descriptive way through different types of media (newspapers). They offer help to the media by bringing attention of issues that media houses may have left out. Citizen journalism gives the audience a broader range of news. A disadvantage of citizen journalism would be the professionalism of it. It would only be a disadvantage if that person does not have the skill or correct evidence to back up a specific story. In order for a journalist to have a good story they would need the particular skills that they get through training but what citizen journalism allows is that it shows us that it’s not to say that an ordinary person is unable to tell the story to the audience. Social media has developed a large interest in news online and the need for us to share information with others quicker and easier. The downfall of social media is that people post lots of false stories. Once false content is posted for all to read about, people in the mainstream media can be sued by the person who they have released information falsely about. (Anon., n.d.)
