ASD have many evidenced based intervention approaches that could be used to target a functional therapy session. The intervention approaches that will be used for client BV, include Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and Social Stories Approach. Discrete Trial Training is a form of ABA therapy based on one on one instructional approach used to teach skills in a planned, controlled, and systematic manner. It is used when a learner needs to learn a skill best taught in small repeated steps (Lovass, 1973). Social stories approach is designed for higher-functioning children and adolescents with ASD. “Scripts/stories” are written for each child that provide explanations of appropriate behaviors in social situations with which the individual is having difficulty (Gray, 1994, 1998; Gray & Garand, 1993). DTT intervention has strengths that are associated with this approach. A strength related to this approach is that DTT is useful for children with ASD, who need help acquiring new skills. Another strength related to this form of intervention includes how it provides a one on one therapy for the child. This approach also requires a one on one form of therapy which may not be possible in all school districts due to unavailability or there not being enough funds in the system. Another weakness to this approach could be that the child only knows how to initiate conversation with instructor based on certain cues provided for them, therefore, they might not be able to apply what they learned with their peers. DTT have had various claims on efficacy that support this approach.
