Flight nursing has many different directions to it, sometimes people go to a certain critical care unit and they should get experience in many different fields. Not only are the patients on the flight, critical care but sometimes they are pediatrics and cardiac patients. It is good to get experience in several fields to widen the knowledge and care you can give. Critical thinking skills are another must. Besides planning care for your patient, often on very short notice, you’ll calculate how altitude changes will affect your patient’s condition. Your only backup will be a set of protocols and maybe a voice on the radio from a physician. That’s why you need these years of experience and some mature judgment behind you. These include; decreased oxygen, decreased barometric pressure, temperature changes, decreased humidity, the noises with the flight along with the vibrations, fatigue, and G-forces. These factors will impact the patients with respiratory issues, cardiac problems, pain medications, closed head or eye injuries, burns and fractures, traumatic brain injuries and others as well. Flight nursing is full of challenges and one of the biggest is that there are limited supplies and you can’t just head to a closet to get something when you need it, because if you didn’t bring it along then it’s not there. They should have a level of resourcefulness and they should be able to stay calm in chaotic situations, these practices are recommended. They need to check the aircraft and equipment daily with their partner. Daily duties include cleaning the on-call rooms, cleaning the office and refrigerator, washing aircraft, and checking all expiration dates on all of the equipment and medications.
