Multimedia can be defined as a computer-based interactive communications process that incorporates text, graphics, sound, animation and video. (Shuman, 1998) In 1965, Andy Warhol first coined the word “Multimedia” for his music, video, and art presentation show titled the “Exploding Plastic Inevitable”. Soon multimedia is referred to mean business presentations or slide shows and eventually morphed into its modern interpretation of any presentation that combines different elements mainly text, video, and sound. There are two types of multimedia which are linear multimedia and non-linear multimedia. Linear multimedia is where the elements is presented straight forwardly without any live interaction from the user. Linear multimedia is mainly divided to two types, movie presentations such as fictional movies and printed materials such as magazines. A teacher can have a discussion session about a topic and the students can respond immediately for the feedbacks. The feedbacks can be diverse from images to videos, thus there will be a lot more information on the topic discussed for the students and teacher. Others integration ideas on using this kind of apps are for brainstorming, assessments and many more other to come. In conclusion, the usage of interactive multimedia in education can be explored more with the further development in the future. For now, our current technologies only exploit our visual and hearing senses. In the future the information we might be able to “touch” or “smell” information”. The power of interactive multimedia can be maximized for a long term in the education field in order to facilitate learning.
