The american civil war was an internal conflict fought in the united states from 1861 to 1865. The Union faced secessionists in eleven Southern states grouped together as the Confederate States of America. Abraham lincoln was one of the commanders during the civil war. Some of the advantages for the north are that they had almost 4 times as many free citizens, they had many people to grow food and to work in factories making supplies, they had more than 70% of the nation's rail lines, they had a strong navy and a large fleet of private trading ships. Some of the disadvantages for the north are that the northern soldiers had to conquer a huge area to bring the south back into the union, they were invading unfamiliar land. Although they did have some disadvantages and those were that they had few factories to produce weapons, railroad tracts, and other supplies. They had few railroads to move troops and vital supplies. The south had a small population, and about 9 million lived in the confederacy and 22 million in the union.
