Disconnected in a Technically Connected World

Campus has become an apocalyptic wasteland. All of us walk around as if we are blindfolded from the world around us. We all look like we’re social media corpses, hungry for the flesh and brains of social networking. All day the only thing we can pay attention to is how many texts, tweets, and snapchats we have and will receive throughout the day. The average day in life is often a struggle when it comes to communication. Most social interactions feel forced, uneasy, and all around awkward. Social media has become the most acceptable drug of our time. We are all addicted to something, but many of us are addicted to our phones and we can't really argue that, I'll admit that I'm also addicted to mine. However, I hate this addiction. It feels like a trap, I wish I was able to really live my life. …show more content…

People try to glorify their lives on social media for some sort of approval, we only show the "good" parts of our lives online but does that necessarily mean we are really enjoying our lives? Growing up outside as a child to later be introduced to Facebook, Instagram, snapchat, etc…felt like such a huge change in life. I stopped going outside, I stopped being active, and I stopped playing real games with my friends. Everything became virtual, the friends I played with outside turned into the friends I played games with on my phone. I feel that many of us knew that technology would run our lives, but a lot of us didn’t want to believe it. On numerous occasions I have caught myself staring into a screen to see the lives of other people, they always look happy and that they are really enjoying life. I often get upset and jealous over other people’s lives, but if I weren't on my phone perhaps I wouldn’t. What makes us want to snap a picture every time we do something? Is it for the memory or is it for the Instagram
