Everyone has a distinctive identity, but their identity can be a result of the social construction in society. Identity is influenced by the existing discourses. Discourse exist because they are socially practiced daily Identity is also impacted by the way others view your being. Most individuals would regard myself as a powerless kid. Michael Foucault’s theory explains that the possession of power and knowledge gives them superiority over others. (Miller, 1990). This was evident within my childhood experience. I was easily influenced acting within discourses. My father held extensive knowledge of the world that I did not possess and this gave him control over my lifestyle choices. He acted upon by the dominant discourses of raising a child. He would only have allowed make lifestyle decisions based on his perspective. This situation was similar to other children in my school. Many parents of other households would hold responsibility and control over their children. My father would behave the same way as other parents because he would seem abnormal to others. He could have chosen to challenge the discourse surrounding childhood learning, but he was afraid to be out of place and excluded by the other families. This was also a situation where people were able to take advantage of other people who did not possess the same amounts of cultural capital. This circumstance encourages discourse of monolingualism due to the language barriers in society. My father was forced to learn the dominant language, as he was afraid people would trick him again.
