The Outsiders Essay Do you judge a book by it’s cover? Well in the 1960’s people were judged by how they looked. It was a battle between the Socs and Greasers and a 14 year old greaser, named Ponyboy, is caught in the middle of it all. In the beginning of the novel, Ponyboy gets jumped by Socs after coming home from a movie.
Do you know how it feels to be discriminated against just because of who you are? If you don’t, then read the book “The Outsiders”. The Outsiders is a novel by S.E. Hinton. It is a story of young men fighting for their rights, just because they are lower class. One of the young men is named Two-Bit Mathews.
Discrimination, according to the textbook, is the unequal treatment of various categories of people. (Macionis pg.86) In the movie, when the younger generation and some of the older generation start to turn to color from black and white, the townspeople get angry and can’t accept the change. As a result, they start to hang up signs in the stores saying
“The Outsiders” (1983) is a film adaptation of the classic novel by S.E. Hinton, it is not based on a true story. It is about two rival gangs from different socioeconomic backgrounds, the Greasers and the Socs, set in the 1960’s. Their rivalry heats up when one of the Greasers kills a Soc. The Socs are a group of people who have a lot of money and privilege. The Greaser are working class and do not have many things.
Discrimination the way black people were affected by. Black people were physically abused by white people. They were abused because the white people thought they were different because they were black. In the book, Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry Mr.Sims throws Stacey off the sidewalk.
The movie, “42”, was about a young baseball player whose been discriminated against the people around him. He was trying to find happiness by playing baseball. Not only was he trying to find happiness, he was battling against prejudice and segregation. He had to face many challenges once he joined the major league. There were times when he wanted to give up completely, but he found the strength to keep playing and ignore what was said about him.
Stereotypes are part of our everyday lives. S.E Hinton’s novel The outsiders has many examples of stereotypes and how they affect our lives.
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a book full of unexpected character revelations. Readers realize that Dally is not the cold, unemotional person he seems to be. This is shown many times in the book, when Dallas puts his friends before himself. Characterization is when an author creates memorable characters whose words, actions, and feelings reveal human truths. S.E. Hinton uses the craft move of characterization in order to teach readers that Dallas Winston hides his love and feelings in order to protect himself from getting hurt.
In the end we can conclude that, Discrimination within the novel has a negative impact on many of the characters mental stability, wellbeing and the feeling of being safe , it is unfair and makes the characters question themselves and their surroundings, and it also results in war, death and being an outcast. Therefore discrimination is not only a dangerous thing in the old society but in today’s society
In the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, it talks about a gang with not much money called the greasers, that goes up against a wealthy gang called the socs. The greasers have a big disadvantage here since they do not have very much money and can’t get off the hook as easily as the socs. Showing that the law is unfair for the greasers because they are poor. Dally gave Ponyboy and Johnny a gun and got put in jail for it. Johnny killed a guy in self defense, and said that if he ever got caught, he would get the electric chair, and if Ponyboy ever got caught he would be sent to the reformatory.
What’s the importance of being in a loving community? A community is something that most people want. It gives those people who need it most a home away from home. In the Outsiders, intolerance is shown with what background a person came from. For example, the greasers hated the socs because they thought that they had it really easy where they came from add they didn’t have to deal with poverty, dead parents and having the police always after them. But in the words of Cherry Valance, “It’s rough all over. ”(S.E. Hinton 35). But even though Cherry tolerated some of the greasers the rest of the socs just thought that they were dirty liars, cheats and thieves.
Over the past 4 months my 8th grade class has been reading the book To Kill a Mockingbird. It takes place Maycomb, Alabama during the late 20’s early 30’s. This was dark times for everyone with the Great Depression, lack of jobs, and overall tough times for all. To Kill a Mockingbird touches base on racism, sexism, classism, ageism, and breaking the “social code”,Something that I feel truly outlines the entire book was discrimination. Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.
A main theme in her novel is group identity, and racism is a form of group identity. In The Outsiders, set in the 1960’s, there are two main conflicting groups; the Socs and the greasers. The reader can relate the greasers and the Socs to current day blacks and whites. Both the greasers and the Socs and blacks and whites think that, at times, their group/race is better than the other. Violent fighting occurs often between the two groups.
