In the novel The Street, Lutie Johnson faces discrimination because she is female. She was treated differently, was frequently looked down on by men, and was frequently asked to use her body to earn more money. She stayed resilient in her situation and is ambitious to work hard to gain money to provide his son, Bub, with the things he needs and have a suitable lifestyle. Similarly, Mirabel Madrigal from the movie Encanto experienced similar but different situations to Lutie. Maribel faced discrimination for not receiving a gift but stayed resilient because she loves her family. After discovering that her husband, Jim, had been bringing women home while she worked, Lutie Johnson became a single mother, and Abuela Alma became a single parent after her husband was killed by the conquerors of their home. Though they appear to have no other similarities aside from being single mothers, they are similar in how they worked hard to provide for their children, and both are concerned that their children will face problems and hardship. Lutie wants to provide her son, Bub, with the things he needs and be able to live life like Henry Chandler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chandler, whom she worked for. Though being a single parent is a difficult situation, she doesn’t want Bub to help her work to earn money because she wants Bub to be like little Henry, who doesn't have to work, and she thinks that shining shoes will prevent Bub from living a better life, which caused Lutie to yell at her son. She worked harder to make more money, which left her with less time to care for Bub and keep track of what he was up to. Abuela raised her children alone, which is difficult while also helping her community and people.
