Did you know in the 1900’s women could lose their jobs for being pregnant? Women in the 1900s have always been discriminated against. They were only seen as housewives and did not have the same rights and opportunities as men. They weren’t allowed to be outspoken and were only allowed to take care of their kids, cook, and clean. Finally, women decided they had enough and started fighting for advanced education, voting rights, and equal pay. For decades women have been fighting for the same rights men have in society. Before talking through what women were fighting for and why they were fighting for these rights, it’s important to learn about what their life was and how they were treated. Women took care of their kids and cooked food for their husbands before he came home. One article states that “Young and not-so-young women had no choice but to stay chaste until marriage. They were not even allowed to speak to men unless there was a married woman present as a chaperone” (Hughes). This shows women were told not to talk to men until married, which was usually when they were in their early to mid twenties. Things that we have always found normal were some things that women were not allowed to do in the 18-1900’s. One quote in an article says “The idea that the only “true” woman was a pious, submissive wife and mother concerned exclusively with home and family” (Women's Suffrage). This quote perfectly states what women were viewed as by men in the 18-1900’s. Women could not own land and could not vote, women were servants to their husbands and they could not change that. Women were not allowed advanced education and would only go to school for a few years. Most women went to school until the age of 12 or until the end of middle school. One article acknowledges this by saying “The education of women was not a priority” (History of Gender and Education in the U.S.). Women were discriminated against and were told that they couldn’t do the same things as men could do such as getting an education. They were only seen as housewives and were not smart enough to be anything other than housewives. In this article it says that “In Britain, women were first allowed to attend university in 1868, but at first they were not awarded degrees, they were only awarded a certificate of proficiency” (Lambert). This shows women were allowed in universities but could not study or get a job in certain fields of work that men could get with degrees. Without advanced education and without degrees women would not have been able to get jobs that you would see them in today.
