Discuss Kafka's Use Of Imagery In The Metamorphosis

Have you ever felt so empty inside that you became everted with reality? Well, throughout the story “The Metamorphosis,” the author displays how the emotions are enhanced by imagery throughout the short story. The main character Gregor undergoes a transformation into a bug, and experiences the treatment he felt on the inside now on the outside. Throughout this story, it shows the estrangement of Gregor’s relationship with his family. The most important literary device in “The Metamorphosis” is imagery because it allows the reader to endure an experience, and makes the story more intriguing.. In the short story”The Metamorphosis,” imagery helps the reader endure an experience while reading.The author uses imagery vividly to help the reader understand the text better. “He was lying on his back as hard as armor plate, and when he lifted his head a little, he saw his vaulted brown belly, sectioned by arch-shaped ribs, to whose dome the cover, about to slide off completely, could barely cling” (Kafka 1156), when this is said in the text the reader is able comprehend the words, and accordingly create an image and mentally experiencing what …show more content…

“These little red apples rolled around on the floor as if electrified, clicking into each another” (Kafka 1179). When the author uses imagery in this quote, it not only appeals to the reader visually, but also auditorily. When the apples are rolling around the floor, and hitting each other the audience is able to envision the all of that occurring. The imagery is able to grasp the reader, and keep them amused. This quote in the story helps a reader feel the intensity of the situation, which keeps the audience interested. “Only after he got to the door he notice what had really attracted him- the smell of something to eat” (Kafka 1167).
