Pros and Cons of Nonviolent protests Around the world there has been a huge range of different protests about people’s strong beliefs. Some of these protests have been violent and some nonviolent. During this writing I am going to dive into some of the pros and cons of nonviolent protests to see how effective they were. I am going to explore different protests that I have researched to find out whether nonviolent protests are worth peoples time or to whether they should just go “all guns blazing” approach and make the protest violent. Firstly, I looked into finding some information about Americas protest background as I think Americans have some of the strongest beliefs which make the protests the most fascinating. In the USA between 1960 and 1995 protests were a lot more likely to be violent. I believe this is because they didn’t believe that a nonviolent process would get the job done. So, this is a disadvantage of nonviolent protests as sometimes sitting back and protesting just isn’t enough. People thought that nonviolent protests were weak and weren’t worth everyone’s time. Between this time there was “data on over 23000 protests” meaning that roughly 23000 protests were recorded within the 35 years. So, I read an article by Michael Fitzgerald who found out some statistics to whether nonviolent protests are good. He said, “from 1990 to 2015 about half of all nonviolent campaigns for regime change succeeded compared to about one quarter of violence insurgences”. So, this quote proves that nonviolent protests are actually more effective than violent ones. Violent protests are often good for causing short term success whereas nonviolent protests don’t really get that gain.
