Discussion Of Honesty In Shakespeare's Othello

What makes you not trust someone? Is it because they are never there for you? Is it because they always lie? In the book Othello the character Iago is one of the characters that cannot be trusted because of how he behaves and his words. Iago cannot be trusted because he is dishonest, he is selfish, and he has no respect.

Iago is untrustworthy because he is dishonest. Othello tells Iago that he “shouldst” be honest, because there is no justice in lying but Iago says “I should be wise; for honesty's a fool And loses that it works for.” Iago is saying that yes he should always be wise but honesty is stupid and if he is honest he loses what he had worked for. In the same way Iago proves himself yet again not trustworthy by saying “O wretched fool -That lov’st to make thine honesty a vice!-O monstrous world! Take note, take note, O world,- To be direct and honest is not safe.- I thank you for this profit, and from hence- I’ll love no friend, sith love breeds such offence.” here Iago is saying it is preposterous to be honest if it is going to hurt someone; but what he doesn’t understand is that if you are not being honest you are hurting them more by lying. In the beginning of the play Iago is enraged because Othello did not promote him. Iago says “I follow him to serve my turn upon him.” here Iago is saying that because he was not promoted he will take advantage of him but he should just be proud for Cassio who got promoted and work harder. Iago also says “Rouse him. Make after him, Poison his delight, Proclaim him in the streets. Incense her kinsmen, And, though he in a fertile climate dwell, Plague him with flies. Though that his joy be joy Yet throw such changes of vexation on’t” here Iago is telling Roderigo to wake Desdemona’s father, pester him, and spoil his happiness.
