Recommendation Report A recent report published by an international panel has identified that the implementation of standards and classifications systems could significantly improve patient safety though the leveraging of data which would allow quality improvement initiatives to be conducted. The purpose of this recommendation report is to compare and review the International Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems Tenth Revision, Canada (ICD-10-CA) and Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine – Clinical Terms (SNOMED-CT), and determine which solution would best contribute to the improvement of patient safety in Canada. In this paper, the information provided to the Minister of Health in the Briefing Paper will be analyzed and possible solutions identified. In order to determine the best course of action we must compare and contrast the two systems in order to fully understand both their challenges as well as their benefits. SNOMED-CT is an extensive clinical terminology which is used exclusively though automated electronic health records (EHR) or other software applications.
