A disorder characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality states is known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) or also previously known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). Along with having multiple identities one who has this disorder may also experience self - destructive behavior, impulsivity, or may participate in self-harm. It is known that DID is the result of extreme and repeated trauma that occurs during important periods of development during childhood. Dissociation Identity Disorder is rare in which it only occurs in fewer than 200,000 cases per year in the US. In cases that the disorder is present, the person often struggles with understanding and coping with their disorder which is portrayed in the 2010 drama, Frankie & Alice. …show more content…

Before receiving treatment Frankie knows nothing about the other personalities. Many people who have this disorder live for years without any awareness of their alter personalities which like Frankie didn't find out about her condition until her mid-30s. To people who have this disorder each of these personalities has its own memories, behaviors, and relationships. During these shifts in personalities, one personality dominates at one time and often occurs during distress which Frankie refers to as blackouts. During these times of distress, Frankie doesn’t recall any of her actions or thoughts. For example, during one of Frankie’s blackouts “Alice” purchases a dress from a Hollywood boutique, and even goes to the extinct of attending a wedding neither she nor Frankie was invited to. During these blackout Frankie has no recollection of what had previous happened except for the consequences of her action which leads her with no money or ending up in
