Defining Distracted Driving Anyone handling an 18-wheeler that is text messaging is twenty-three times more likely to get in an accident. In the simple act of dialing a cellphone, a truck driver is six times more likely to cause an accident. Distracted driving is not just limited to texting and talking on a cellphone.
Just last night, the Oklahoma Highway reports a 17-year-old youth from Locust Grove was killed when the Jeep he was riding in went off a county road and struck a tree. The troopers say the cause of the crash was driver inattention. Distracted driving is defined as "any activity that could divert a person 's attention away from the primary task of driving. " Distracted driving can lead to minor fender benders or catastrophic collisions.

In this era, with technology as a part of everyday life, it has become difficult to use a simple Public Service Announcement (PSA) as a way to reduce distracted drivers. This is due, for the most part, to the developed habit of assuming. People believe, since it’s seen in many shows and commercials, that those ‘bad things’ that come as a result of distracted driving are not likely to occur to them. People want to prove that they are able to do multiple tasks at once and every PSA would be a challenge so to speak, to show they are above average at multitasking. Those such assumptions and aspirations to prove oneself have resulted in such growing rates.
Manual driving infects everyone. Taking a bite of a sandwich, changing the radio station, to talking to others in the car, to grabbing a phone from a bag in the back seat. Those are all examples of distracted manual driving. The best way to avoid an accident from these distractions is by keeping those things away from you as you are driving.
Also every day in the United States nine people are killed in accidents that involve texting while driving. Texting while driving puts your health at risk. One simple text could cause an accident that could put you or others in critically condition and could even be fatal. You could get paralyzed, have brain damage, and even die just from one simple text message.
“In 2013, there were a total of 30,057 fatal crashes in the United States that involved 44,574 drivers. As a result of those fatal crashes, almost 32,719 people were killed.” Almost half of distracted driving crashes are rear end crashes which then results in hitting more cars and making those cars go out of control ending in either hitting innocent people or more cars. There are many things the Federal government and the states are doing to prevent this thing from happening. Such as “many states are banning texting while driving, or using graduated driver licensing systems for teen drivers, to help raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and to keep it from occurring.”
Distracted driving causes many accidents in the US every years. With being a distracted driving, around “3,154 people are killed in distraction-related crashes and about 424,000 people are injured in crashes involving a distracted driver” (Harper). In what ways can the people develop solutions to prevent distracted driving for teenagers? One way to help prevent distracted driving is to enforce stricter laws for the amount of passengers allowed in a car with a teenage driver. Backseat drivers can cause the most distractions for a driver and also the use of any technology while driving.

Countless of us might not consider distracted driving as an immense issue for the reason that we personally have probably not experienced an accident or a fatality caused by this. There obtained a ten year period in the United States where effective death rates for distracted driving went up to fifty thousand plus thousands that extract injuries. Distracted driving is extremely common in youth. Kids do not understand the dangers of distracted driving. That is why I believe we should have an app on our phones, that when you get into a car the phone powers down. The risk of dying is not worth one text. Yet kids in today's world do not see the risks or possibilities that can come out of it.

There are many risk that comes with distracted driving although not all end in a horrific results most accidents are lethal. The government realized the threat and accident percentage was rising so they are trying to ban CellPhone use while driving . Although cell phones have not been around for a very long time, they have become a key part of our lives. People use their cell phones for just about everything such as: texting, talking, social media etc.
Kids watch parents, parents watch parents and drivers watch drivers. A recent survey stated , 75% of teens say their friends text and drive and 77% say their parents text and drive. When people see other people texting, they might think it is okay to text and drive. Texting while driving is clearly dangerous for several reasons.
