The extreme divergence in reporting by the Tribune and the Times may have prolonged the strike. Even as late as mid July 1894, the reports published painted a rosy picture for readers favoring the management (Tribune) and those supporting the striking workers (Times). In its report on 15th July, 1894 the Chicago Tribune mocked Eugene Debs’s statement that “the Northwestern will not be turning a wheel tonight…” and reported that all trains did run as scheduled (73). On the same day, the Chicago Times reported that Eugene Debs articulated at a meeting to the strikers that he had received telegrams from twenty five points west of the Mississippi that the railroads were completely tied up (74).
