Wyatt Crouse Easterday Period 6 August 29, 2014 Connecting Divergent and Lord of the Flies Divergent is a recent young adult novel written by Veronica Roth in which the novel’s protagonist, Beatrice “Tris” Prior faces a difficult choice in which she must discover where she truly belongs in her dystopian society. In Lord of the Flies by William Goulding (later adapted into a 1963 and 1990 film by Peter Brook and Harry Hook, respectively), a group of young English school boys crash land on a desert island and grow paranoid of a mythical ‘beastie’, and because of this are divided into separate, rival groups, which soon turn violent. Both books deal with themes of self-discovery, rivalry, and both offer commentary pertaining to the human condition. Divergent opens with Beatrice’s mother cutting her hair in anticipation of a test Beatrice will take which will determine her faction. Both books feature dynamic characters that learn about themselves as well as the true nature of others. The novels teach a general lesson that even a small amount of power can corrupt any human.
