In the dystopian science fiction book Divergent, Veronica Roth shows how you should be able to stay true to yourself and what you believe no matter what is going on. This theme is important to people, especially younger people, because it says you can be unique, and you shouldn’t have to worry about it. In the book, Beatrice, the main character and Abnegation-born, has to choose what faction to live in and by the rules of in the future city of Chicago. She can either give in to changing to fit in and stay alive, or she can show she’s Divergent and risk getting killed.

In today’s society, people probably will not get killed for being themselves, but they could be teased or bullied. Society today has so many rules to fit in, and most people are not willing to do those. Some of those rules are downright gross, or just really weird. Outside influences should not indicate who you are going to be, or change you. People should not fit others into a category, and those people should not be okay with it. Being unique is good, and if people are unique, then they are being who they are. That is not a bad thing; it is a good thing. The story of Tris’s journey through the Dauntless initiation is a good example for young people, especially people who can be impressionable, to be who you are, no matter what other people think and almost no matter what the risks could be. Tris was able to stay true to herself while still managing through Dauntless initiation. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone around my age. It is especially good for people going through personality changes or being teased about their personality, but be warned of the cliffhanger at the
