“Divergent” is a book by Veronica Roth, written in 2011 and later followed by two even more fascinating books. A theme central to this book is how being different from the well-accepted society, leads to outcasting and persecution of those unfit for the system. The reality of being unable to conform to society's norms alters one's life permanently. This is supported by the societal expectations and the ensuing experiences which the main character of the book goes through, changing her way of thinking and her newly found urge to make impulsive dangerous decisions in order to fit in the society she currently belongs to. The day comes and Beatrice, whose current faction is Abnegation, chooses the Dauntless faction who are the bravest and the strongest ones and in complete contrast to what she is accustomed to in the peaceful ascetic Abnegation. This is a proof how the accepted norms by the society can influence the choice of a girl, dooming her on a dangerous life full of keeping secrets about her true personality and on tragic existence without being able to see her family and friends ever again. Few weeks later, Beatrice starts her training with Dauntless leaders, in order to become a member of the faction. She has never faced such dangerous and exhausting physical and psychological experiences which make her so desperate that she even considers giving up and becoming factionless (the poorest and the most rejected group of people). The hardships of the training processes changed the selfless and altruistic nature of Beatrice into a brave, confident and determined person who gave up everything she ever dreamed of only to fit in the strongly defined society and to survive.
