Imagine if one had to pick a faction that decides an individual's whole future, which leads to leaving one family. In the dystopian novel Divergent by Veronica Roth, Tris turns 16 and has to take the amplitude test which helps her decide what her future faction is. Tris finds out she’s Divergent. That leads her to have to make a hard choice. She goes from Abnegation to Dauntless, meaning she has to go from being selfless to selfish and learn how to fight. Along the way of trying to keep Divergent a secret, she meets four. The lesson Veronica wanted people to take in is that survival is important because the decisions people make affect one's self and others. The author uses dialogue in the book Divergent to develop the theme of survival to show how serious it was for Tris to not show her Divergence.
