Imagine if one had to pick a faction that decides an individual's whole future, which leads to leaving one family. In the dystopian novel Divergent by Veronica Roth, Tris turns 16 and has to take the amplitude test which helps her decide what her future faction is. Tris finds out she’s Divergent. That leads her to have to make a hard choice. She goes from Abnegation to Dauntless, meaning she has to go from being selfless to selfish and learn how to fight. Along the way of trying to keep Divergent a secret, she meets four. The lesson Veronica wanted people to take in is that survival is important because the decisions people make affect one's self and others. The author uses dialogue in the book Divergent to develop the theme of survival to show how serious it was for Tris to not show her Divergence. After Tris gets her results, Tori warns Tris that, “...you should never share them with anyone, ever, no matter what happens. Divergence is extremely dangerous” (23). Tris was nervous she wouldn't pass the final test, she let her thoughts override her mind. Her, “...heartbeat speeds up. What if what worked in the first simulation doesn’t work here? What if I can’t break the glass unless in under duress” (386). This quote connects to the theme of survival since Tris had to go through many tests to prove that she deserves a spot as a Dauntless member. Even though the amplitude tests weren’t real and there wasn’t a way of dying, Tris had to put up a fight to secure a spot as a Dauntless even if it meant having to face her biggest fears. The idea wasn’t just about trying to stay alive. It was also about making it past every level to not get eliminated so she didn't have to become factionless.
