School Ties, a film about a star high school quarterback who has the opportunity to attend an exclusive preparatory school but has to conceal his Jewish background, evoked many personal reactions, as it highlighted many diversity issues and situations. Specifically, there were many instances of micro-aggressions, prejudice, racism, and stereotypes. Moreover, School Ties also demonstrated how influential one’s parents, culture, background, society, and upbringing can be on one’s worldview. Therefore, the following will be a discussion of several cultural issues and situations from the movie that caused me to have personal reactions and that can be applied to clinical settings. Furthermore, the movie was set in the 1950s whereby Jewish individuals were viewed negatively by White Christians, or at least the White Christians in the movie, as well as the rest of the majority society. Throughout the movie, David was constantly confronted with micro-aggressions, prejudice, stereotypes, and other reminders that he was not in a friendly environment. Once his true identity was revealed, those micro-aggressions, prejudices, and even racisms were directed at him. While the movie did not portray David suffering from severe psychological issues, he did appear to be frustrated and often coped by fighting. This reaction is consistent with Pieterse, Todd, Neville, and Carter’s (2012) findings, which indicated that perceived racism is positively correlated with negative psychological outcomes (i.e., depression, anxiety, somatization, and PTSD). Pieterse et al’s (2012) findings, along with the movie, were both applicable to therapists working with diverse populations. Specifically, therapists can utilize that information to help them better understand some of the common issues associated with perceived racism, prejudice, and
